How to read the chart

Each row is one torque in every unit. Use the buttons to list round N·m values (metric specs) or round ft·lb values (inch specs), and search for the number you have.

ft·lb and lbf·ft are the same unit, as are in·lb and lbf·in. kgf·cm and kgf·m appear on older metric and Asian specs; 1 kgf·m is 100 kgf·cm.

For a value not in the table, use the converter above. To work out what torque a bolt needs in the first place, use the bolt torque calculator, and find the socket on the wrench size chart.

Conversion factors

Every factor follows from exact definitions in NIST Special Publication 811: 1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 in = 0.0254 m and 1 kgf = 9.80665 N (standard gravity).

So 1 ft·lb = 4.4482216152605 × 0.3048 = 1.355817948 N·m, 1 in·lb = 0.112984829 N·m, 1 kgf·cm = 0.0980665 N·m and 1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m. The chart and converter keep full precision and round only for display, to 4 significant figures.

Example: A wrench reads 35 ft·lb; what is that in N·m and in·lb?

  1. 35 × 1.355818 = 47.4536 N·m.
  2. 35 × 12 = 420 in·lb.

Result: 35 ft·lb = 47.45 N·m = 420 in·lb.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert N·m to ft·lb?

Multiply by 0.737562, or divide by 1.355818. For example, 50 N·m = 36.88 ft·lb.

How do I convert ft·lb to N·m?

Multiply by 1.355818. For example, 100 ft·lb = 135.6 N·m.

How many in·lb are in a ft·lb?

Exactly 12, because there are 12 inches in a foot.

Is ft·lb the same as lb·ft?

Yes, for torque they are the same unit. Some references write lbf·ft to separate torque from the energy unit foot-pound.

How do I convert kgf·cm to N·m?

Multiply by 0.0980665. For example, 100 kgf·cm = 9.807 N·m.
