SCAR (Supplier Corrective Action Request)

A SCAR, or supplier corrective action request, is a formal request asking a supplier to find and fix the cause of a problem with what they delivered. The customer describes the nonconformance with evidence, such as part numbers, quantities and measurements, and sets due dates. The supplier responds with containment of suspect stock, the root cause, corrective actions and proof that they worked, often in an 8D format. The customer reviews the response and closes the SCAR only when the evidence is convincing.

Example: Receiving inspection rejects a lot of 500 castings for porosity, and quality issues a SCAR with photos and the inspection results. The supplier sorts its stock, traces the porosity to a blocked die vent, cleans it, adds a daily vent check, and sends three clean lots as proof before the SCAR is closed.

Why it matters

Sorting and returning bad lots handles the symptom, but the supplier keeps making them until the cause is fixed. SCARs push the fix back to the source, and their history feeds supplier ratings and decisions about which suppliers to keep.
