Job Aid

A job aid is a short reference that a person uses while doing a task, so they do not have to remember every detail. It is often one page or a single card: a checklist, a decision table, a labeled photo, a settings chart or a flowchart, posted at the machine or carried by the worker. A job aid supports a task the person is already trained on; it does not replace training or the full work instruction. If it guides product or safety decisions, it should be controlled like any other document.

Example: A laminated card at a press brake shows the bend allowance for each material and thickness the cell runs, with a photo of the correct die setup. Operators check it before each changeover instead of looking up the full setup instruction.

Why it matters

Many errors happen on steps people do rarely, or on steps that need an exact value such as a setting, a torque or a part orientation. A job aid puts that value in front of the operator at the moment it is needed, and it is quicker to read than a multi-page instruction.
