FE Exam Approved Calculators

NCEES allows only three families of calculators in its exams: Casio models with fx-115 or fx-991 in the name, the HP 33s and HP 35s, and Texas Instruments models with TI-30X or TI-36X in the name. NCEES says this list applies through 2027 and is reviewed every year, so check the official policy before exam day.

The approved list

This is a summary of the NCEES calculator policy. The policy page is the authority; if it changes, it wins.

How to choose one

Any approved model can do the arithmetic the FE needs. The differences are in convenience: some models in these families have an equation solver, numerical integration and derivatives, matrix, vector and complex-number modes, and a natural textbook display; others are simpler. Check the manual of the exact model you are considering rather than relying on the family name.

Pick one early and use it for every homework set and practice problem from then on. The exam is no time to learn where the keys are. If you already own an approved model that you are fluent with, that is usually the best choice.

Skills to practise on your calculator

These are the operations that cost time or points when they go wrong. Practise each one until it is automatic on your own model.

Practise with it

Work the FE statics practice problems and mechanics of materials practice problems with your exam calculator and a timer, then follow one of the study plans: 12 weeks or 8 weeks. For checking homework answers, the free engineering calculators show every intermediate step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a TI-84 or another graphing calculator on the FE?

No. Only the models on the NCEES list are allowed, and no graphing calculators are on it.

Is the Casio fx-991EX allowed?

Yes. NCEES approves every Casio calculator with "fx-991" or "fx-115" in its model name.

Does the approved list change?

NCEES reviews it every year. The current list is stated to apply through 2027. Check the NCEES calculator policy page before your exam.

Do I need a calculator for the whole exam?

Most quantitative questions need one. Bring the approved model you practised with, and check the NCEES exam-day rules for anything else you plan to bring into the test room.
