8-Week FE Study Plan

An 8-week plan for the FE Mechanical exam when your test date is close: the heaviest subjects keep a week each, the lighter ones are paired, and the last week is a full timed practice exam and targeted review. Print the free PDF and tick off each week.

How to use this schedule

Count back 8 weeks from your exam appointment and write the start date of each week on the printed plan.

Study in short blocks most days rather than one long session a week. Tick each task when it is done; if you fall behind, drop timed sets from strong areas first, never from weak ones.

Work every problem with the FE Reference Handbook and your exam calculator, not your textbook notes, so the exam feels familiar.

Suggested time: 12–15 hours a week. That is our estimate for a student who has finished the core courses, not an NCEES figure.

  • Download the FE Reference Handbook from MyNCEES and skim its table of contents
  • Mathematics, probability and statistics
  • Work 20 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
2Economics, ethics, electrical
  • Engineering economics and ethics
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Work 25 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
3Statics
  • Print the statics cheat sheet; review the statics lessons
  • Work the 5 FE statics practice problems
  • Work 25 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
4Mechanics of materials and materials
  • Print the mechanics of materials cheat sheet
  • Work the 5 FE mechanics of materials practice problems
  • Material properties and processing
  • Work 25 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
5Dynamics, vibrations, controls
  • Dynamics, kinematics and vibrations
  • Measurements, instrumentation and controls
  • Work 25 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
6Fluids and thermodynamics
  • Print the fluid mechanics and thermodynamics cheat sheets
  • Fluid mechanics, then thermodynamics
  • Work 30 timed problems at about 3 minutes each, using only the handbook and your approved calculator
7Heat transfer and design
  • Heat transfer
  • Mechanical design and analysis, including GD&T
  • One mixed set of 30 problems, timed
8Full practice exam and exam week
  • Take a full-length timed practice exam early in the week
  • Re-study your three weakest areas
  • Check your ID, appointment time and calculator model against the NCEES rules

How the weeks are weighted

The NCEES FE Mechanical specification gives each knowledge area a range of questions; mechanics and the thermal-fluid sciences carry the most. This plan spends a full week on each of those and pairs the smaller areas. See the FE Mechanical exam overview for how the areas group together.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 weeks enough to study for the FE?

It is a common plan for students who have recently finished the core courses. 12–15 hours a week is our suggestion, not an NCEES figure; plan more if you have been out of school for a while or a subject is new to you.

What order should I study the topics in?

Start with the handbook and the areas the rest depends on (math, statics), then follow the order you took the courses. Leave mixed review and a full practice exam for the end.

Should I use the cheat sheets during the exam?

You cannot: the FE is closed book. Use the printed sheets while you study, then practise finding the same formulas in the electronic handbook.
