PPAP (Production Part Approval Process)

PPAP is the package of evidence a supplier sends a customer to show that a production process makes parts that meet every requirement, at the planned rate, with the real tooling and people. A full package can hold up to 18 elements, including design records, FMEAs, the control plan, measurement system studies, dimensional results, capability studies and a signed Part Submission Warrant. The customer picks a submission level that sets how much of it is sent and how much is kept on file.

Example: Before shipping a new machined housing, a supplier runs a production trial, measures every drawing characteristic on sample parts, completes a gauge R&R and a capability study, and sends a Level 3 package with the signed warrant for approval.

Why it matters

Shipping without PPAP approval can mean rejected lots, a charge-back or a lost customer. Inside the plant, the PPAP freezes the approved process: if the material, tooling, location or method changes later, the change usually needs a new submission, which keeps uncontrolled changes off the shop floor.
