Control Plan

A control plan is a table that says how each important product and process characteristic is kept under control during production. For each process step it lists the characteristic, its specification, the measurement method, the sample size and frequency, the control method, such as SPC or a check sheet, and the reaction plan when a result is out. Plants often keep separate versions for prototype, pre-launch and production runs. It is built from the PFMEA and points to the work instructions that carry it out.

Example: One row for a drilled hole lists diameter 8.00 to 8.05 mm, checked with a plug gauge, five parts every hour, recorded on an X-bar and R chart. The reaction plan says to stop the machine, quarantine parts made since the last good check, and call the setter.

Why it matters

Without a control plan, each shift decides for itself what to check and what to do when a check fails. The reaction plan matters most: it tells the operator exactly which parts to hold, so a bad result does not quietly ship.
