5S is a method for organizing a work area so that it is clean, orderly and easy to keep that way. The name comes from five steps: sort (remove what is not needed), set in order (give everything a marked place), shine (clean and inspect), standardize (write down how the area should look and be kept) and sustain (make it a habit, usually with regular audits). The five steps began as Japanese words starting with S, and the English versions keep the S. 5S is often a first step in a lean program.
Example: At a CNC cell, the team removes unused fixtures, hangs a shadow board with an outline for each wrench and gauge, marks floor spots for carts, and starts a weekly 5S audit. A missing tool is now visible at a glance.
Time spent searching for tools and parts is pure waste, and clutter hides leaks, damage and mixed-up parts. An organized area also makes problems visible, which supports safety, quality checks and the other lean tools built on top of it.
